Asylum Seeker Support
Asylum Seekers Centre
Jews for Social Action (JSA) supports the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown, which provides assistance to community-based asylum seekers; many of whom receive no government assistance, are not allowed to work, and have no access to Medicare.
We provide lunch to the Centre’s clients every Tuesday, teach classes like cooking and nutrition, and organise outings to national parks, the zoo, and museums. JSA collects donations of non-perishable food, toiletries and baby items for distribution to the Centre’s clients.
Please drop an item in the ‘Tzedakah Centre’ cabinet in the NSTE Sanctuary foyer to show your support.
Settlement Services International (SSI)
SSI is a not-for-profit humanitarian settlement organisation and the umbrella body for Migrant Resource Centres across NSW. We've undertaken to help SSI with:
- Providing outings for refugees and asylum seekers
- Bushcare with National Parks at Middle Head with SSI clients
- Working in the community kitchen at the Auburn community centre every second Wednesday
Music for Refugees
We support refugees by donating musical instruments to 'Music for Refugees'. You are invited to donate small instruments such as string, brass, wind or percussion instruments, or acoustic guitars with nylon strings to the NSTE office. No pianos or drumkits please. If possible, guitars must be in cases.
Philip Feinstein created the program to reduce the stress and trauma of refugees in detention through music. For more information, visit the 'Music for Refugees' website

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our synagogue stands, the land of the Gamaragal people. Many of us and our forebears have come from other lands and found our spirit of kinship with Indigenous Australians whose connection with this land preceded ours, and we recognise that connection as sacred and enduring. May we walk together toward a future of justice and healing.
