North Shore Temple Emanuel
a Progressive Jewish Congregation
The High Holy Days have arrived and it is traditional to reflect on the year that has passed and chart our way forward to the year ahead.
At NSTE we are in the midst of ‘Building Our Future,’ with renovations to the Max Joseph Building well underway and our Capital Appeal having nearly reached 80% of our target. Your generosity of response to the Capital Appeal has been inspiring and a clear vote of confidence in our future. This project will result in an improved and integrated campus that generations will be proud to call home.
What makes our campus a home, however, is more than solely the brick-and-mortar buildings. It is the spirit of what goes on inside these buildings and around our “house” that help make it a “home”.
Our Shabbat services are inspiring, warm and embracing, and regularly include celebratory family events, the honouring of significant personal milestones, and guest speakers who share their unique wisdom. “Bagels & Brachas” and “Hands-Free Tefilah” services are specially crafted to encourage the participation of young families, and the post-bnei mitzvah “Teen Torah Tag Team” regularly lead prayers and read from the Torah. Our Festival services range from the traditional to the creative and include activities for the little ones. Kitchen Krew dinners every couple of months enhance the Shabbat and Festival experience for so many of our members and friends, and our choir offers “Mi Shebeirach” services to people who are housebound or in hospital.
We provide formal and informal education opportunities for all ages, starting at birth through our Playgroup, Apples & Honey Pre-School, Meah Hebrew & Religion School, B’nei Mitzvah and post-B’nei Mitzvah programs, Adult Education programs and Torah Study group.
We continue to strengthen our communal bonds through our Community Wellbeing Program. Our Rabbis, Cantor, staff, and volunteers offer special support to members in times of need through support phone calls, home or hospital visits, transport and delivery of lovingly prepared meals and shiva platters. There are also calls to acknowledge “milestone” birthdays and simchas and just to “check in.” We strive to support community members both in times of need and in times of joy.
“Boomers & Beyond” come together for popular film nights, bush walks, and bus outings, as well as regular book club meetings and discussion groups. Our Manna Jewish support group, facilitated by Rabbi Nicole, provides solace and sustenance for those going through significant life transitions or facing unfamiliar challenges. Jews For Social Action (JSA) continue a hands-on approach to Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), including collecting goods for people in need, in conjunction with each of the Jewish festivals. Our Hashkafah lay-led discussion group leads engaging monthly gatherings on Shabbat afternoons. Friends of the NSTE Garden maintain and beautify our grounds and sanctuary display. To make NSTE more inclusive, our NSTE Inclusion and Diversity Task Force works to ensure access, integration, resources, and support for the great diversity of individuals who make up our community. As well, NSTE partners with the wider Jewish community on initiatives such as the Jewish Suicide Prevention Strategy and the “Go North” campaign.
New membership continues to grow, with 31 new member families having joined since September last year and more prospective members on the horizon. Our intake of students for our B'nei Mitzvah program is looking strong in the coming years, and Netzer engagement is tremendous amongst NSTE families.
Our many accomplishments, which make our house a home, depend heavily on your support. Donations for our building renovation project can only be applied to the building works, and even though we continue to streamline operations and are attentive to our finances, membership fees only cover half of our day-to-day operating costs. We rely on fundraising like the Kol Nidre Appeal in order to maintain the programming and services which so many enjoy and upon which many depend.
In 2017, we had the highest contribution ever towards our Kol Nidre Appeal. To chart our way forward, we ask that you support our Kol Nidre Appeal of 2018. Whatever the amount of your contribution, you can be sure that it will have a direct impact on a member of our NSTE community.
Your donation, of any size, is greatly appreciated.
