Boomers' Monday Forum

The Boomers' Monday Forum is a new Boomers group formed to expand on Rabbi Lampert’s 'Conversations with the Rabbi’ Monday sessions.

This new Forum will run fortnightly on Mondays at 10am for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes in the Valerie Jaye Hall.  The session format will include a presentation followed by discussion.

A line up of speakers has already been identified and includes content such as Jewish history, religious topics, and Israeli current affairs. As well, from time to time, there may be entertainers available to share their talents and stories.

There is no cost to attend.   Morning tea will be provided.

Upcoming Speakers

Monday 2 July 2018 - Peter Allen

TOPIC - The Australian Light Horse and the 2017 Centenary of the liberation of Israel: from the sublime victory at Beersheba to the ridiculous surrender at Jerusalem – the untold stories.

“Just as the Anzacs’ desperate charge at Beersheba reversed their defeat at Gallipoli and swung the battle tide against the Turks in Palestine - coinciding with the drafting of the Balfour Declaration – on 11th December 1917, another liberation was now unfolding for the Jews in Jerusalem, this time from 400 years of oppression under the Muslim Ottoman regime.”

The contrast between these two triumphs could not be starker.

Using videos and photos, Peter will take you on an amazing journey:

- From the story of the extraordinary ‘walers’ of the Australian Light Horse and their charge on Beersheba to the anticlimactic relief of Jerusalem by General Allenby
- From the Jewish Anzacs of 1917 to the 2017 centenary re-enactment in Israel.

Past Events

What a fantastic launch event for our Boomers Monday Forum!

Eliza McCarroll’s, “These are a few of my favourite texts”, was the first of many guest speaker series events at the fortnightly sessions.

Mixing educational context with small group discussion, the session was not only well-attended but also clearly captivating.

Eliza shared four texts with the group, explaining the liturgical significance and application, the Lithuanian Jewish situation and many personal stories including challenges and highlights during her first year of Rabbinic Studies at HUC in Israel.
