The Sir Asher Joel Oration 2019

Judean life in ancient Babylon presented by Dr Laurie Pearce, The Sir Asher Joel Fellow 2019 from the University of California, Berkeley

How much weeping really took place by the rivers of Babylon? Cuneiform texts from the time of Nebuchadnezzar's conquest of Jerusalem through the Persian period attest to the integration of Judean exiles into Babylonian society. This Oration will provide evidence from historical chronicles, palace ration lists, and local entrepreneurial and administrative records to offer a picture of the diverse life of the Jewish community in ancient Babylon.
