Topic: "Counting Teeth": The Use of Humour in the Rabbinic Literature

In this session we will look at a number of examples of early rabbinic humour, with examples drawn primarily from the Mishna and Talmud. Humour was used by the rabbis for a number of purposes, whether to emphasise a point, to ridicule somebody, or even just to get the reader’s attention. By looking at a variety of examples, we hope to gain a clearer idea as to why humour was used in the Talmud, and what precisely made the rabbis laugh.
