
From its humble beginnings in 1984, when about 40 people attended, the NSTE Senior Citizens Variety Concert has grown into a much anticipated annual event.
When I agreed to give this drash five months ago, I knew that I’d have plenty to say, given that I was getting ready to spend ten days in Israel as part of the World Union for Progressive Judaism’s Beutel Leadership Seminar. What I didn’t know was what this week’s Parshat HaShavuah would be. Turns out that it’s Behar Bechukotai which is not only difficult to pronounce but it’s also slightly difficult to meaningfully connect to my recent experience. It somehow didn’t seem enough to connect G-D instructions to Moses about Sabbaticals to the fact that I’m standing here because Rabbi Gary is currently on a Sabbatical.
